Brett Bejeck from Limitless.ai stopped by IDEO to give a talk about a tool his company is making to help augment human memory. With 90% of memories forgotten after 7 days, a problem that only gets worse with age. The goal of Limitless is to help stop that curve with a wearable that records and transcribes audio thoughout the day as both a way to archive interactions and memories, but also to help build greater context to build a more personalized AI experience that draws on your real life conversations. The pendant that Limitless designed is a small wearable device that transcribes audio and feeds it back into the Limitless app where you can access transcripts broken up across different "key moments or interactions" you had throughout your day. As the experience involves, roadmap includes features like help with To Dos, starred moments, search, daily insights, and the ability to ask the AI different questions about your day. The rest of the session was focused on how we might design think about consent and recording. Even as laws differ from state to state about one-party versus two-party consent when recording a conversation, Limitless wanted to take a user-focused view and think about how these audio transcripts and recordings could be designed to foster a sense of trust amongst everyone you engage with throughout the day. That the notion of proactive consent is present throughout the entire product experience. We discussed the current state of recordable technology and AI summaries, the potentially awkward conversations that follow when forced to ask "is it okay if I record this?" and how there might be more ambient and less invasive ways to arrive at consent while making it clear what it is exactly that these transcripts can and cannot be used for. It was a conversation that will continue to gain relevance as we delegate more things like meeting notes to AI tools. How do we build trustworthy, human connections while using machine-driven technology to help us lead richer, more memorable lives?
