Serhii Zatsarynin, CEO and founder of Ovul AI, discusses their device for testing hormones in saliva to help women track ovulation and estrogen levels, highlighting the role of AI in recognizing patterns in dried saliva samples.

Ovul AI is a women's health startup focused on helping women understand their hormone levels through saliva testing. Serhii explains that Ovul AI's device utilizes a century-old discovery: specific patterns formed when saliva dries indicate high estrogen levels, which can be observed under a microscope. Ovul AI's device is a digital microscope that captures photos of dried saliva, using AI to recognize these patterns and determine ovulation and estrogen levels.

Serhii shares the journey of developing the product, from a makeshift microscope using a child's toy and a camera for the very first version, to over 30 iterations of the device, emphasizing rapid prototyping and customer feedback. He highlights how initial assumptions about ovulation tracking evolved to address broader needs for understanding overall hormone levels for health management, including fertility, contraception, pregnancy monitoring, and hormonal regulation during perimenopause. The company encourages early product release and continuous customer interaction to gain valuable insights.

The discussion also covers the company's approach to data privacy, acknowledging the sensitivity of women's health data and the lack of clear industry standards. Ovul AI provides a consent form on its website detailing data usage and is actively seeking initiatives and advice on data privacy.

Regarding the device's capabilities, Serhii notes that the AI system can run directly on the device, and while it could display a simple "ovulating or not" indicator, the app is crucial for providing a comprehensive health overview by integrating various data points like smoking habits, water intake, sleep, diet, and physical activity with saliva photos to find new correlations.

The presentation concludes with a Q&A session covering topics such as the device's egg-shaped design, inspired by the most liked photo on the internet at the time of its creation and its resemblance to lipsticks. Questions also address the microscopic camera specifications, the possibility of integrating with fitness trackers (with an emphasis on leveraging big data for personalized health insights), empowering users to share data with healthcare providers, and the company's strategies for navigating the regulatory landscape for FDA approval and insurance coverage. Serhii also shares insights into the company's distributed team structure, with headquarters in Minnesota and co-founders in other locations, including Ukraine, and the strategic advantages of being based in Minnesota for medical device startups. He also discusses the device's potential in managing chronic conditions like endometriosis and PCOS by detecting estrogen level fluctuations.
